Single By Sunday is a high energy, pop-punk band, sometimes referred to as the love child of Blink 182 and Green Day with My Chemical Romance as the Great Uncle. S.B.S. is one of the most exciting bands to come out of Scotland in recent years. They were voted ‘Best Emerging International Artist’ at Toronto’s Indie Week 2017. The band has to date released 4 EPs; Get Up Get Out, Atom Bomb, Watch Out World and Punk-U along with two singles; Romeo and the Nordoff Robbins Charity single ‘Say What.’ Now they have released their latest single “I Want You (You Want Me)” Our own Steve Sievers got to interview the band below.

Here at Bionic Buzz, we are all about people’s passions. Where did your passion for music come from that made you want to be in a band? Was it a certain album you heard? A live performance you saw? Or was it just natural for you as a kid?

Jonny
There was always music being played in our house when I was growing up, from reggae to Dancehall, pop to Bhangra. I tried drawing for a while, cause I fancied being a Tattoo artist but that was short-lived, so it became all about the music. It turned out to be the one thing that I was best at.

Josh
My Dad had an old guitar that he used to play every now and then but he wouldn’t let me play it. So I used to wait until he’d gone out and have a go. I also used to look at and listen to bands on the tv & radio and thought ‘that’s what I’d like to do’. I started a couple of bands but this is obviously the best one…..so far.

Jack
My dad was a mad Prince fan when I was growing up, so I grew up hearing a lot of Prince and funk tracks and then I started listening to heavier stuff like ‘System of A Down’ and a bunch or rap stuff etc and decided that I fancied being up on stage.

Jorge
I’m just the product of my dad’s record collection, lol. I grew up listening to the classic rock bands like AC/DC, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath then Guns & Roses, Metallica etc. I suppose I just wanted to rock out the way my dad did but with me playing.

Tell us about the Pop-Punk scene in the UK? The scene isn’t as big as it used to be here in the USA.

Jorge
Lol, that’s funny, we think its bigger in the US than it is in the UK.

Jack
I think its certainly better received over here than it is back home.

Josh
I think a lot of the stuff happening in the UK just now is kind of generic pop e.g. a lot of the same beats just being re-hashed.

Jonny
A lot of the UK seems to lean towards the Indie ‘shoe gazer’ type of bands; bands that just stand there and play, while looking down at their shoes and that just ain’t us. We’re all about having fun and running around on stage etc.

Josh
Back in the day like the mid ’90s when bands like ‘Busted’ were around, the scene was different. Busted were responsible for ‘Year 3000’ (WARNING!!! spoiler alert) which a lot of people in the States think was an original Jonas Brothers song. UK radio was more receptive to the jumpy guitar band sound. I think now they kind of regard Pop Punk as ‘something that was a thing’ but we see the genre as having evolved and the audiences that we’ve met in America seem to get that.

Your new single is amazing! Really love the music video. It looks like it was filmed at an amusement park? Tell us about it.

Jorge
Well, well, well, where do we begin?

Josh
We decided that we wanted to make something fun, something that was going to show us, our personality, us doing something that ordinary everyday people do, just going out and having fun.

Jonny
Yes, it was shot in a theme park but for legal reasons, we can’t say where but apparently it’s where Marvel exists. We had a wicked time just running around and behaving like mates do when you’re in a band and you’re shooting a music video to a really cool track. What more can we say?

Jack
The track is all about being honest with your significant other. If you want them, tell them that you want them and stop messing around. It’s also a good track to just play loud and have fun too.

If you got to put together your ultimate tour package together for Single By Sunday, who would it be? Has to be current bands.

Jorge
Travis Barker on drums

Jack
Nile Rogers on bass.

Josh
Brendon Urie on vocals.

Jonny
Brian May……no brainer!

So what’s next? When will the single be available on iTunes here in the USA? New tour? New EP or album?

Jonny
We’re planning the next single as we speak; we’ve got management locked away in a cupboard hashing out a plan.

Jack
We’re hoping to jump onto some live shows and maybe some festivals.

Josh
Yeah, recording stuff is really cool but live is where the magic happens, so we would definitely like to tour.

Jonny
Did Josh really just say ‘it’s where the magic happens?’ #cringe, we’re not talking about the bedroom. Basically, we love to play live.

Jorge
We’re certainly going to be releasing more songs and videos and continue to build our fan base. Since we moved to LA we’ve been really well received and we’d like to capitalise on that if we can.
