Bionic Buzz® interviewed Chicago-based artist Rob O’Brien, the mastermind behind the alternative emo project dying in designer. Following last year’s release of Nobody’s Happy. 2, he returns on June 6th with “evil eyes,” the first single from a new era that’s louder, darker, and deeply personal. We chatted about the new single, his passion for music, the dark days of his career during COVID, and more.

Raised on basement shows, a dial-up internet connection, and a childhood full of isolation, O’Brien poured years of trauma, anger, and clarity into this new work. “evil eyes” is the opening symptom: a melodic, nu-metal-infused gut-punch that blends soaring choruses with violent breakdowns and brutally honest lyrics. It introduces the album’s central theme of being drawn to someone you know will ruin you and sets the stage for what’s to come. He was deeply inspired by other artists such as Slipknot, Korn and Linkin Park.
