Bionic Buzz® got to interview actress Chase Masterson from Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Robotech Shadow Chronicles about her groundbreaking non-profit Pop Culture Hero Coalition she co-founded. In today’s world approximately 28% to 90% of students are victims of bullying. The U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently stated that “Kids increasingly are experiencing bullying, not just in school but online…they’re growing up in a popular culture and a media culture that reminds kids often that they aren’t good-looking enough, thin enough, popular enough, rich enough, and frankly, just not enough.
Groundbreaking non-profit Pop Culture Hero Coalition (aka @SuperheroIRL), is using Star Wars, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Batman, and other iconic stories to empower kids to create an empire of justice, healing, and systemic change.
Their story begins around an unlikely “team-up” of a Star Trek actress and a Star Wars mom who through personal experience decided to combat bullying in schools and support positive mental health. Co-Founder actress Chase Masterson, known best as Leeta on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, created the non-profit and teamed up with award-winning author and educator, Carrie Goldman, whose daughter many years ago was bullied for loving Star Wars and started the geek girl campaign #MayTheForceBeWithKatie. @SuperheroIRL is currently supporting schools, YMCA and more. Their groundbreaking program, The Heroic Journey, is the program used for children, teens, and parents in over 160 YMCA’s nationwide and it is set to expand this month.
