Bionic Buzz® got to interview singer-songwriter Malia J. We talked about where his passion for music came from, her music journey, her cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” being used in Marvel Studio’s Black Widow, her up coming EP, Reflections and more!
When you watch Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, it was be the voice of rising star vocalist and songwriter Malia J that lures you into the film’s web of intrigues. The Hawaiian-born singer’s haunting, ethereal rendition of Nirvana’s iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was chosen to accompany the new film’s opening sequence, setting a tense and mysterious tone for the Scarlett Johansson-starring blockbuster.
Black Widow is hardly the first time that A-list filmmakers have called on Malia’s gorgeous voice to conjure an appropriately evocative atmosphere for their imagery. In 2018 she won a coveted Clio Award for the Season 2 trailer for the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale, which utilized her otherworldly cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.”
Earlier this year, Malia’s cinematic transformation of Bananarama’s hit “Cruel Summer” provided the unsettling vibe for the trailer for Netflix’s documentary series Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer. Her music has also captivated audiences in trailers for the Fox series Gotham, the Oscar-winning documentary short The White Helmets, and the Warner Bros. horror movie Light’s Out; and graced the CW series Riverdale, the smash Bollywood film Saaho, and ESPN’s coverage of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, among countless others.
Later this summer, fans enticed by hearing Malia J’s alluring voice on TV and movie screens and via her popular YouTube channel will be introduced to her breathtaking songwriting skills with the release of her debut EP, Reflections. In addition to “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the EP will feature Malia’s original music for the first time ever.
