I just got done doing a fun work out to Cardio Sport. It was created by founder, John Duffy in 2006. As a long time, high level athlete, John found himself bored and unmotivated by the fitness options available to keep himself moving after his playing days were over. Now working with the Kevin Lyman Group, they are bringing the Warped Tour vibe to your virtual workout.

A little background on me. Getting old sucks. I’m now in my 40’s and work out is important because of my age and I’m diabetic. But I also get anxiety about working out around other people. I was stick figure back in the day and grew up in a very preppy town. Taking my shirt off for gym class was a nightmare for me back then. One of my favorite music memories was Van Warped Tour back in the 2000’s. I used to co-own Level 27 Clothing and for many warped tour dates each year I would have a booth at the festival. I even did the whole tour back in 2004. Later I did a comic book for the charity Music Saves Lives that took place at Vans Warped Tour with 3OH!3. I went on many dates to do comic book signing. I love seeing my favorite bands and discovering news one at every Warped Tour.

So what could motivate me to work out? Something I can do at home while being safe and no one watching. Enter Cardio Sport with their on-demand workout platform! Where “All you need tonight is some energy, some enthusiasm, maybe a ball.” Their 30 minute work out event with Ryan Key from Yellowcard and Derek Sanders from Mayday Parade was last Friday night. When I interviewed Ryan about it, he did say it was like a work-out to emo night and he was right.

The night kicked off with Ryan DJing the emo classic “Black Parade” from My Chemical Romance. The screen was black and white with a film scratcher filter on it, just like in the music video. The fitness started with just a parade march around and stepping or marching over hockey sticks & soccer balls in the Cardio Sport work out room. It was spilt screened with Ryan in his home studio, DJing. Then Ryan mixes into Fall Out Boy’s “Dance Dance” with the work out kicking in! Speaking of the work outs, they are simple and easy to do. With a great play list featuring songs from artists like Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, Mayday Parade, Blink-182,Yellowcard and New Found Glory. There are fun cheesy moments that will put a smile on your face. Especially when the Cardio Sport crew used a hockey stick as a mic stand, tennis racket as air guitar and footballs as drums. As cheesy as it was, it was actually fun to do! Remember when I was afraid to take off my shirt days I was talking about early? Well, I would air guitar and lip synch to music alone in my basement during that time.

That’s what Derek Sanders did when it was his turn in the work out. With his “actually” microphone on stand, he lip synched to a great play list and danced around. When it was done, there was a virtual fan hang with Ryan and Derek.  Overall it was a fun way to motivate me to work out and rock out to some of my favorite bands. I can’t wait to see what guest stars will come next. As for me, its time to hit the shower. Review by dyslexic Steve Sievers.
