SUPER LTD, the boutique label from NEON, have acquired North American rights to writer/director Tony Stone’s genre-bending true crime drama Ted K, which recently premiered to critical acclaim as part of the Panorama section at the Berlin International Film Festival. Sharlto Copley (District 9, Hardcore Henry) stars in the title role. The film is presented by Heathen Films in association with Verisimilitude, Hideout Pictures, In Your Face Entertainment and Cameron Brodie.
Based on Ted Kaczynski’s diaries and writings, Ted K is a kaleidoscopic true crime journey into the life of one of America’s most complex and eccentric killers. The film tracks a period in the life of Kaczynski, more widely known as the Unabomber, and draws from his personal diaries and accounts from those who knew him during his life in hiding. The Hollywood Reporter said the film was “mesmerizing” with The Guardian calling it a “riveting, dreamlike evocation of this man’s tortured, unhappy life”.
“We are very excited to be working with NEON and SUPER LTD to release this wild and nuanced story of the Unabomber,” commented Stone. “Ted Kaczynski is one of the more enigmatic violent figures in the history of American terror, living a primitive and isolated existence while waging a war on technology from his own backyard to the entire nation. Our filmmaking approach verged on the archaeological as we filmed on the exact location of where his cabin once stood and used many of his remaining original structures. Filming over four seasons in the town of Lincoln, Montana where he lived on the outskirts, and working with the people who encountered him and at times employed him, added another layer of capturing the environment and psyche that had impact on his actions. Based on his writings as well as stories from those who knew Kaczynski, we felt we were able to depict the essence of the man and create an experience of his existence.”
Executive producers are Cameron Brodie, Tyler Brodie, Melissa Auf der Maur, Shannon Houchins, Potsy Ponciroli and Trevor O’Neil. It is co-produced by Jake Perlin, Niles Roth and Colin Scott, and Tony Stone and Matt Flanders produced in association with Sharlto Copley.
