Bionic Buzz interviewed filmmaker Robert Redfield via Zoom, where we discussed where his passion for filmmaking began before diving deep into his imaginative and entertaining short film Committee Animal.

Committee Animal offers a clever twist on evolution, asking the question: what if the quirkiest animals on Earth—like platypuses, giraffes, and armadillos—were the result of an overworked design committee struggling with red tape, impossible deadlines, and supply chain shortages? The concept turns natural history on its head in a way that’s both hilarious and surprisingly insightful.

The film is a lighthearted yet smart reimagining of how these wonderfully weird creatures came to be, blending sharp satire with inventive world-building. It’s the kind of short that keeps you laughing while also appreciating the creativity behind every detail.

Committee Animal makes its Santa Barbara premiere in the Narrative Shorts section at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Saturday, February 7, with an encore screening on February 9
