Bionic Buzz® interviewed Phillip Kennedy Johnson, acclaimed Marvel Comics writer, over Zoom as we talked about Infernal Hulk and the upcoming Dungeons of Doom series.

During the interview, we discussed where his passion for comic books began, his time serving in the U.S. Army, his creative journey in music, and his latest comic series, Infernal Hulk. Johnson shared how these diverse experiences have shaped his storytelling voice and creative process across multiple mediums. Known for his work on iconic characters including The Incredible Hulk, Batman & Robin, Superman, and Action Comics, Johnson has built an impressive career since breaking into the comics industry in 2015. His résumé also includes celebrated runs on Alien, Green Lantern: War Journal, and Hellhunters.

The Infernal Hulk is a recent ongoing Marvel Comics horror series that began in November 2025, spinning out of the events of the preceding Incredible Hulk (2023) run. The series is a major status-quo shift where the Hulk’s body is possessed by an ancient evil entity called the Eldest, while Bruce Banner is left powerless.

Following a brutal battle in Incredible Hulk #30, the Eldest, an ancient “Mother of Horrors” offspring, succeeds in a long-standing plan to tear Bruce Banner and the Hulk apart into separate entities.

The Infernal Hulk: The Eldest takes over the Hulk’s body, transforming it into an “Infernal Hulk” that is “ten times the monster that everyone always feared Hulk would be”. This possessed Hulk is no longer driven by rage, but by a sinister agenda to usher in an “Age of Monsters” and transform Marvel’s heroes into nightmarish beasts.

In January 2026, Johnson will officially begin writing exclusively for Marvel Comics under a multi-year contract—an exciting milestone following years of critically acclaimed work for both Marvel and DC Comics.

In addition to his mainstream titles, Johnson is the writer and co-creator of The Fellspyre Chronicles for DC Black Label, as well as creator-owned projects including Crocodile Black, Last Sons of America, and Warlords of Appalachia. His work has also been published by Archaia, IDW Publishing, AfterShock Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, and Scout Comics.
