New York, 1961. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. He forges intimate relationships with music icons of Greenwich Village on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.
The exhibit will feature a stunning display of the early 1960s, encompassing the evolution of the young Bob Dylan to the icon he becomes. Visitors will have the opportunity to view Phillips’ meticulously crafted wardrobes, including pieces worn by Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and key pieces from Chalamet’s Bob Dylan. Phillips’ exploration of Dylan’s iconic style evolution, from the precise cut of his Levi’s to the various jackets that defined his look, will be on full display as guests are offered a peek into the fashion that defined a generation.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the costumes, props and backdrops from ‘A Complete Unknown’ in an immersive experience in the ASU FIDM Museum I’m so excited to share the result of collaborations with artisans, tailors, shoemakers, milliners, textile artists and costumers who joined me in building Bob’s Dylan world to tell this story. This is a deeply meaningful passion project and an inspiring story about a young artist finding his voice, carving his own unique musical identity as an artist, poet, and a prolific mysterious minstrel who would write the soundtrack to generations,” said Arianne.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and the community to experience Arianne Phillips’ meticulous craftsmanship up close,.” said Dennita Sewell, director of ASU FIDM and ASU FIDM Museum. “Collaborating with Searchlight Pictures allows us to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the professional world and is invaluable to our students’ development as creative leaders.
ASU FIDM and Searchlight Pictures’ “A Complete Unknown” exhibit will be open to the public beginning Monday, January 6 to Friday, January 17. Viewing hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 10:00am to 7:00pm on Thursday. “A Complete Unknown” will be released in theaters nationwide on December 25, 2024.
