Hard rock band VEER released their new single, “Science,” on all streaming platforms, as well as a music video to support the single. This is the newest release since the band’s previous single, “Red Tide,” which came out last December. Both songs are slated to appear on the band’s forthcoming sophomore album, Soft Machines.
“Science” features the band’s unique, inimitable combination of edgy, guitar-laden rock with a chorus full of pop sensibilities. “The song’s about fact versus fiction, hard science verses fantasy,” explains lead vocalist Ronald Malfi. “Strangely enough, it was written prior to the pandemic, but listening to the lyrics now, it’s eerily prescient. A song about living with your head in the clouds now has a more cynical and poignant meaning.”
The tone of the music video is deliberately different from the band’s previous videos for “Red Tide,” “Breathe,” and others, all of which had a more organic, human feel.
The video for “Science,” on the other hand, is deliberately more alien. It conveys a sort of futuristic, space-themed motif, and presents the themes and lyrics of the song more literally than the band’s previous efforts. “
It’s deliberate,” says Malfi. “These new songs look at the world through a wider lens than the songs on our first album. They’re more global in context, though there is still an innate intimacy in there, too. ‘Science’ is a perfect example—it’s a warm, personal song, with grandiose implications.”
The video was created by drummer Jon Malfi, who does all of the band’s design work. “It was important for the video to compliment the song,” he explains, “but also for it to stand alone visually, on its own merits. It’s telling its own story against the backdrop of our music.”
VEER, who formed in 2016 by the Malfi brothers and their band mates, Ryan Fowler (lead guitar) and Christian Mathis (bass), have quickly risen to the top of the mid-Atlantic music scene while also enjoying international success. In 2018, their debut album, Apocalyptic, Baby, was released and immediately broke the Amazon Top 100 rock albums. That same year, they were voted Best Rock Artist at the prestigious Maryland Music Awards, where they closed the show with a performance of their single, “Come Clean.” The band was also nominated Best Breakout Artist, making them one of the few acts to be nominated for multiple awards in a single year.
“Science,” which was engineered and co-produced by Steve Wright (Slipknot, SR-71, Future Islands), marks the latest release from the band since their previous single, “Red Tide,” and gives fans further insight into what their next album will sound like. The band is hopeful for a spring 2022 release.
