Our own Steve Sievers interviews writer/actress Jasmina Nevada about her book called The Mexican Dueña. Based on a true story. Two señoritas return to a tropical location in search of land or a house to buy or rent, to escape the wintry conditions in their own country. However, all does not go to plan, and they face unexpected events, which they could not have envisaged.
(Steve Sievers) So Jasmina, tell us what made you decide to write this book based on a true story?
(Jasmina Nevada) Originally it was written as a screenplay, but stood on my virtual library shelf for some time ! Found it a long process to get the screenplay made into in a film, without options for funding first, despite my worldwide route as media or as a professional at prestigious Film Festivals such as Sundance, Cannes, Dublin Film Festival etc.
So decided to convert into a book first and try out new skills of self publishing, to promote across within the film industry.
Also, the events in the book, are what I witnessed myself.
What were the challenges writing this book?
As gotten used to writing in screenplay format, I had to re-think and restructure accordingly, into book form. I sought out publishers, editors and designers, but found their quotes rather expensive.
I decided to take the sole project myself. Becoming a graphic designer for the cover, writing the text and converting to the appropriate format and finding the online vehicle that would suit my needs, to self publish. Putting in a lot of time and effort to achieve the final result.
My aim is that now the book is published, a film director or Film Company would take interest and consider making it into a film.
